Conservation treatments are divided into three categories here for informational purposes.
Cleanings involve the removal of dirt, soot, disintegrated and discolored varnishes, old restorations and overpaint.
Structural treatments remedy problems such as tears, cupping and flaking paint, and distortions to the picture plane including dents and buckling or rippling of the canvas.

Inpainting is generally the final step in a treatment and includes the filling, texturing and retouching of losses to return damages or discolorations back to an original undamaged appearance.
